Session Information
Contribution
We will first shortly present today’s Faculté de psychologie et des sciences de l’éducation and its history. Then we will focus on its famous ancestor: the Institut Jean-Jacques Rousseau in discussing a problem that was central in the twenties when it was at its peak: the strong link between educational sciences and new or progressive education. What does it mean and how to explain that the Institut, also significantly called Ecole des sciences (plural) de l’éducation, was regarded at the same time as the incarnation of both: the new psychology or the science of the child and the New Education? And what does it mean that scientists like Claparède or Piaget, members of the Institut, were strongly involved in the movement that aimed at emancipating the childhood from the «state of coercion against nature» in which it seemingly was imprisoned. A problem that in our view is still central for educationalists.
