Defining Pedagogical Ethics - Discussions on Its Purpose, Scope and Foundation The concept "pedagogical ethics"' is mainly used in the Scandinavian countries. In English-speaking countries, the same topic is usually referred to as teacher's ethical codes or teacher's ethics. A reason for this is that in English-speaking countries there is no Herbartian background for the concept "pedagogy". In German-speaking countries expression "Pedägogische Ethik" has more philosophical tone. We prefer the concept "pedagogical ethics" rather than "teacher's ethical codes". Ethical dimension of teacher's work is greater that such teacher's ethical codes, and pedagogical ethics also refers to the ethical dimension of school administration, school reforms and educational research.We prefer to define pedagogical ethics in a way that it includes both theoretical reflection and practical guidelines. Pedagogical ethics refers to Kantian maxims that teachers are obliged to follow, and to Aristotelian virtues of a good teacher. Pedagogical ethics is a representative of professional ethics belonging to the field of practical ethics and having also roots in philosophical ethics. Philosophical aspects of pedagogical ethics include contribution of ethical theories, moral realism versus moral constructivism, nature of current historical and social situation, and a concept of man. Practical aspects of pedagogical ethics cover such themes as justification of teacher's pedagogical actions, personal virtues, pedagogical power and pedagogical care in teacher's profession. In university Departments of Education and Teacher Education, pedagogical ethics forms both academic discipline and study subject.
