This paper will discuss a new high school program based on the Ayuujk world view implemented in an indigenous community near Oaxaca (México). This initiative, recognized by the Mexican Ministry of Education and the OECD as an "innovative emerging model, has entailed a reappraisal of Ayuujk cultural and educational values to promote- The consideration of family and community knowledge. - A notion of knowledge that connects the local with the global.- A concept of students as responsible for their own learning. - A concept of learning as an interactive process with others and as a way of improving one's own life and environment.- A notion of school leadership as a way of contributing to the success of the project. - Great diversification in the use time, space and teaching resources.- The development of research projects focused on subjects relating to the community converts it into an educational resource. This project seeks high levels of quality not only related to students' ability to pass exams, but also to the richness of the school experience, students' capacity to work collaboratively and to become community leaders.
