04 SES 10 B, Student Engagement – European Perspective
Symposium
Contribution
Research topic/aim: In research the voices of disengaged students are not often heard. This paper is based on an ongoing PhD-study. The aim of the study is to explore the relation between student engagement, inclusive settings and achievement. Theoretical framework: A socio-cultural approach on learning is taken as well as theoretical perspectives on engagement and motivation. In seeking to increase engagement in schools and to understand how to deal with low academic achievement and high dropout rate it is pivotal to try to define and explore engagement in schools. It is also of great importance to study the school settings. Methodology: Mixed methods have been used in the study. In part one a narrative approach has been taken, in part two a student engagement instrument was used on 1298 students in seventh grade and in part three the methods used were observations and interviews with students and teachers. Expected findings: The results of the study intend to show the relation between engagement -inclusive settings - achievements, and to show how schools can develop engaging learning environments in order for all students to achieve at their best.
