04 SES 10 B, Student Engagement – European Perspective
Symposium
Contribution
A present challenge in the Danish education system is that approximately 20% of the students do not complete an upper secondary education. Likewise a great part of the students are performing on an average level and only small percentages are high performers. Ensuring students’ inclusion and high engagement is thus highly important. As one part of a Mixed Method design this study is asking for the characteristics of Student Engagement in grade 7. Quantitative analysis is used from the Student Engagement Instrument (SEI) where approximately 1,200 students in grade 7 are questioned. The schools are chosen to represent students with high and low socioeconomic status as well as schools in major cities and in provinces. Results reveal a certain pattern in the students’ answers. For example do less engaged students not consider education as important for their future as the highly engaged students do. Elaboration on results and method will be in focus of this presentation. As the other part of the Mixed Method design the results of the SEI are used to select classes for the qualitative collection of data. This will focus on the characteristics of the learning environments having students with an overall high level of engagement.
