Contribution
This paper will discuss initial results of a European Project in the UK, Italy and the Czech Republic which focuses on developing effective ways of engaging newly-arrived migrant pupils and parents. The Engaging Migrant Parents and Children (EMPAC) project is run by Ealing Council with research support from the Tavistock Institute. The overarching aim of the EMPAC project is to improve the educational achievement of under-performing migrant pupils aged 3 – 11 years old. This will be achieved by identifying and piloting new and existing strategies for supporting the integration of newly-arrived families and children into school life. The evaluation of the project combines a qualitative and quantitative methodology, including online surveys of teachers before and after the intervention, as well as qualitative interviews with teachers and migrant parents. By the time of ECER 2014, the research team will be able to report on the online baseline survey, initial visits to schools and qualitative interviews with teachers to explore any barriers encountered and successful strategies used to integrate newly-arrived families and children in their schools and any lessons learned in the European partner countries in piloting the project resources and adapting their own work practices.
