14 SES 10, Patterns of Social Integration, Exclusion and Adaptation in Transitions to Adulthood for Vulnerable Children, Youth and Adults
Symposium
Contribution
In this study the life situation of young adults with intellectual disabilities and young adults with behaviour problems are compared, their transition and adaptation to adult life and how they are encountered by helping system of the welfare state. The study is based on data about transitions during the school phase of the life course (1996-1999) and in addition on data about school experiences, work and independent living, own family and house when the vulnerable young adults are 24 (494 telephone interviews). Norway is judged to be the OECD country with the lowest percentage of jobs possible to seek for unskilled workers. These work possibilities would be an important factor to study as an indicator of adaptation in early adult life. What is their work situation and independent family life after transition from school? What are their experiences with the helping system? What helped and what hindered their possibilities of participation in work and every day life? How were their independent contributions judged and valued in this process? As seen from the vulnerable young adults' position – how important for social integration is the contribution by the support system during these transitions? What contributions have earlier school experiences made?
