Symposium
Contribution
As citizens, young people hold effective rights and duties in relation to the City. As individuals and as part of groups, they have their own ways of perceiving, living and imagining the City as a space of development, creation, conviviality, memory and identity. In this paper, we will: 1. identify and analyze, at a sociological and organizational level, initiatives through which young people interact with the City; 2. present and discuss data pertaining to young people’s social and educational experiences in the urban context; and 3. stimulate the debate about the role of youth in (physically and figuratively) building urban spaces which further facilitate these individuals’ development. By reference to the experiences of over 80 boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 17, living and/or studying in Porto (Portugal), we plan to discuss the way(s) in which space and its fruition influence the construction of identity(ies), a sense of belonging, a notion of a past, present and future community, and the emergence of senses of citizenship, as well as the meanings, manipulations and projects that young people allot to the city.
