Symposium
Contribution
My research indicates that children's geographic location and upbringing within a specific social and cultural framework is of great importance to their sense of security and future opportunities. The urban realities that children grow up in are very different and the influence urban dynamics have on each child is diverse and important. Socialization goes far beyond the individual's own family, as contacts in the neighborhood, friends and acquaintances at school and other children's parents play important roles in everyday experiences. Generally, children consider their childhood neighborhood as “theirs” - the place they feel at home. Children in less privileged families, however, often reside in neighborhoods with other less privileged citizens, which often lead to collective experiences of deprivation, unrest and physical mobility. Such conditions threaten children's opportunities for positive experiences in the neighborhood and school, thus weakening their future opportunities and life chances. Affluent children, by contrast, rarely experience social problems, nor in their own families or in their urban environment, and therefore tend to have greater opportunities to devote themselves to schoolwork and ensure better prospects in their educational and professional lives. Such differences are not individual, nor solely based on the family capital - they are indeed urban and collective.
