Symposium
Contribution
This paper analyses the results of two case studies on family participation in educative activities conducted under the INCLUD-ED Project. One case studied the participation of 20 Moroccan mothers in DLG in a urban primary school in Catalonia (Spain). The second case studied the dialogic reading in an after-school club in a primary school in South-eastern Malta, which involved parents and children reading together. Children’s results in standardized tests reported a significant improvement in communicative skills over the academic year. The life stories with families and children showed evidences on how these actions contributed to transform their interactions at home. Discussions about classic works of literature were transferred to the child-parent interactions and were part of their daily lives. According to the data analysed, these experiences affected parents’ and children’s motivation to read and help migrant mothers to improve the language acquisition of the host country. Parents stated becoming more able to understand the schoolwork of their children and they felt more confident to help them with their homework.
