Session Information
25 SES 13, Refractions of Children and Young People's Human Rights
Symposium
Contribution
All maintained primary and secondary schools in England are legally required to follow the statutory National Curriculum (NC). The NC sets out programmes of study, and the subject content, for subjects which must be taught to all pupils. With regard to provision for pre-school children, a statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation stage sets out the standards Early Years providers must meet. This presentation will focus on ways in which educating children and young people as holders of human rights is explicitly stated, or inferred, within these various documents. Consideration will be given to which aspects of human rights are included and emphasised within the prescribed subject content and within the guidance given on the teaching of the various statutory subjects. Consideration will also be given to government documentation relating to i) the teaching of religious education and sex education in secondary schools, as these are subjects are compulsory for schools to teach, even though they are not part of the NC; and ii) the teaching of Personal, Social and Health Education in primary schools - this is a non-statutory subject but one which is considered by the Secretary of State to be an important and necessary part of all pupils education.
