Contribution
The symposium addresses the notion of institutional creativity within higher education from different angles and perspectives. Starting from the fundamental philosophical perspective of “creative economy”, the contribution of Michael Peters and Tina Besley (University of Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, USA) shows, that knowledge production and use re-profiles arts, humanities and social sciences. The role of universities shifts towards a space of creation and ideas.
The second contribution of Susanne Maria Weber (Philipps-University of Marburg, Germany) shows, that within Bologna Process, this potential space of creation and ideas empirically is not yet vital. Grounded on empirical results of the implementation of the Bologna Process, the paper shows challenges in the fields of inclusion, internationalization and transdisciplinarity and develops criteria for institutional creativity of universities in transformation.
The third contribution of Marios Katsioloudes (Hellenic American University, Athens, Greece) focuses on a modelling approach, starting from the need for academic redesign of education. He questions the traditional mode of education by showing the case of Business Education. In his presentation, he exemplifies the ideal model of an alternative approach of comprehensive Business Education.
The fourth contributor, Urbain Zadi (United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Addis Abbeba, Ethiopia) addresses the "systems of innovation" perspective. Refering to UN University and UN programs like “Academic Impact” he analyzes the potentials and chances for systemic institutional creativity between UN and academic system.
The contributions of the symposium are interconnected by the guiding question of institutional creativity of Universities and Higher Education and follow this question starting with a theoretical analysis, followed by empirical data on the implementation of the Bologna Process, the identification of needs for institutional change, an example of a potential new model and the dimension of institutional partnerships in a perspective of global development and cooperation between academia and the UN system.
