This paper is based on research from a major media literacy project, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council in the UK. It draws on interviews with teachers across three secondary schools and their partner primary schools to explore four key themes. The first is the cultural experience of media specialist teachers. What, in their lives, training, academic background, experience of popular culture and the media, has brought them to the set of beliefs, opinions, practices and pedagogies they now hold? The second is teachers’ perceptions of their students’ media experiences. What do they know of the media cultures their students inhabit? How do they know this? Do they use this knowledge in their teaching, and if so, how? The third is the distinction between online and offline media cultures. How do teachers perceive the line between ‘offline’ and ‘online’ texts, practices, forms of production and distribution? How do these perceptions relate to the different media of print, film, television, games, the internet? The fourth theme is learning progression, a central question of this research project. How do teachers conceive of learning progression in media literacy? What practices do they already adopt? What do they think needs to be done in the future?
