This paper concerns young filmmakers in the Scandinavian countries and how they learn about filmmaking. The paper focuses on the young filmmakers’ perspective on their learning practices across contexts and how they create ‘learning paths’ in relation to resources in diverse contexts, whether formal, non-formal and informal contexts. We see media education in schools as a typically formal context for filmmaking, while after-school programs and film festivals are non-formal contexts for learning about filmmaking outside school, which entail self-teaching and participation in groups with peers. The boundaries between these diverse contexts are of course blurry in practice. To uncover the patterns of activity in these areas, we present case studies of four young filmmakers who are participants in our Scandinavian one-year research project: Making a filmmaker. Drawing on studies of how musicians learn to play popular music and perspectives on diverse contexts and processes for learning, we explore diverse production practices – and diverse types - of young filmmakers. Through our case studies, we aim to map out a conceptual terrain for understanding how, why and where young filmmakers in Scandinavia find resources for filmmaking across contexts. At the symposium we will present the results from this project and a summary which include the main findings. We also present and discuss issues regarding the methodology and methods of the study, looking at ways of developing relationships with interviewees when conducting interviews online (using MSN).
