This paper draws on a three-year research project (MiVA) funded by the FWF seeking to develop a progressive model for media literacy and multimodal literacy for Austrian primary schools in collaboration with primary school teachers through action research projects. As literacy is a situated practice, we felt that in order to develop this scheme, we first have to gain an understanding of the current media cultures and practices of Austrian children, within their families and within their schools. We identified a lack of empirical data on the media use and media cultures of children (especially up to the age of eleven), and regarding teachers in Austria. Therefore the first phase of our research is concerned with obtaining an ecological view of these cultures and practices from a range of perspectives, based on quantitative and qualitative methods. We are currently conducting analyzing the data of a survey conducted among teachers, students and their parents in six Viennese primary schools , among teachers, students and their parents and are planning to conduct qualitative interviews with children, their parents and teachers in the summer term. At the Symposium we will be able to present results from the first phase, comparing and contrasting these with research reports from an international context. The guiding questions are: What are the similarities and/or differences to media cultures and practices in other countries? What kind of implications do these results have for the development of a coherent model of media and multimodal literacy in Austria?
