Contribution
The author bases her reflections on her experience both as a teacher of Young Child Observation in courses inspired by the Tavistock Model and as a co-planner and supervisor of projects realised in nursery schools in the town of Naples (Southern Italy). Her paper will be subdivided into three parts:
(a) The first part will review the historical background of psychoanalytic observation going back to its use by Anna Freud in the Jackson Nurseries and in War Nurseries. (b) She will then describe the development of Young Child Observation in the Tavistock Clinic and discuss some of the specific issues that it poses, compared to the classic model of the Infant Observation introduced by Ester Bick. (c) In the Tavistock Model Courses observations of children in the nursery can be both non participant as in Young Child Seminars and participant as in Work Discussion Seminars. The author will analyse both situations, giving detailed examples both to illustrate technical issues and to show how this specific methodology can deepen our understanding of the specific issues that confront children in this developemental stage, as well as parents and nursery teachers. Finally, the role of observation in the setting up of innovative services within nurseries will be taken into account.
