Contribution
Chartered Teacher was introduced in Scotland in 2003 as a form of incentivized CPD. Inspite of a troubled beginning, Chartered Teacher is becoming embedded within the teaching profession in Scotland, with many teachers now viewing it as a natural stage in their career progression as a teacher. Currently there 749 Chartered Teachers and approximately 3000 teachers studying on CT programmes of study. Teachers attain Chartered Teacher status by demonstrating that they have met the Standard for Chartered Teacher through the completion of a post graduate programme of study.
As a model of accomplished teaching, a critical question is the impact Chartered Teachers have for learners and schools. Research relating to this is growing and this paper will present findings from research undertaken in 2009, as part of a case study, to investigate the role and influence of Chartered Teachers.
It will outline the ways in which Chartered Teachers are contributing, exploring the links between accomplished pedagogy and pupil learning and the means of evidencing this. As a clear role for Chartered Teachers is not fully defined and articulated, the paper will conclude by looking at how evidence from this and other research on accomplished teaching can be used by key stakeholders to develop Chartered Teacher in Scotland.
