This paper describes individualization (individually customized learning process based on personal needs) as a tool for validation of prior learning in Finnish adult education and as a process entering to higher education. The paper bases on the Finnish case study collected by interviews of teachers and supervisors in adult education (n=12) and documents for validation/recognition. The aim of the study was to find out different tools and models for validation of prior learning. The selected tool here is individualisation in adult education that includes three phases: application phase (identification), competence phase (demonstration) and completing the vocational skills phase (recognition). Each phase is recorded into a single document that can be used for follow-up purposes and to maintain quality. The methods of validation non-formal and informal learning have been developed for adult education and training of competence-based qualification system. Quite often, the initial vocational qualification in adult education and further vocational qualification includes less than 120 credit points (three years). This shorter qualification gives eligibility only to the polytechnic (universities of applied sciences) studies in the same field. Vocational qualifications that are less than three years can be completed to a 3-year qualification and they give also general eligibility for higher education.
