Over the last five, the Program for Artistic and Aesthetic Education (PEEA) has developedin Portugal, the following actions: training Programme in different forms of art: Artistic Expression, Education and Musical Expression, Movement and Dance and Drama / Theatre; partnerships with museums, theatres, academies and other institutions

Through this Action Plan, the PEEA aims at gradually reaching the following goals:

Increase the aesthetic dimension of education through the appropriation of the language of the various forms of art, using the specific contents of each of them, in a way as to gradually implementeducational strategies whose actions ensure curricular articulation integrating different languages, fostering cross curricular knowledge.
Develop joint action between educational institutions and the institutions of culture, consideringculture as a need and an asset in the educational process;

Raise awareness among teachers and families to the role of art in children’s education and its relationship with other areas of knowledge
Stimulate the knowledge of the cultural and artistic heritage as a process of affirmation of citizenship and a means of developing cultural literacy.

The implementation of PEEA has been rooted on an open and flexible model, not intended as a 'recipe' for teachers, but one that favours, in an effective way, the essential knowledge that must be mobilized in the curriculum development of aesthetic and artistic areas.

This Program is now facing its first external evaluation.

Method

Due to its audio and visual essence, this poster will present, through word/text, image and sound (if possible), the several parts implied in our research: 1) a brief theoretical exposition of the developed and applied conceptual framework; 2) a description of the methodologies applied in this research; 3) an analysis on the collected data; and 4) the main conclusions of our work. Considering that one of the main methodologies used in the collection of information were several focus-groups with different kinds of intervenients in PEEA (students, teachers, schools’ board members, local institutions and parents), we will show parts of the video interviews with the several panels that will allow to backup, clarify and justify the analysis carried out on the collected data and the main conclusions obtained by our research.

Expected Outcomes

The poster has two purposes. The first is to present, in a visual way, the Program of Aesthetics and Artistic Education, trying to focus on the presentation of the program and in the process of evaluation that is taking place in this year. The second, is to explore other ways of presenting research in arts education, in this case, through a visual poster that is also the production of an object in which content and form have to create a dialogue. The poster in itself, being it a video, has an archival side in the sense that it makes use of archival material from 2010 to the present, here being transformed according to the visual narrative in the making. Our goal is to present this Program using other methods that are also arts based methods. In this way, we hope to construct a visual narrative that can engage with the spectators not only through informing them about a national program, but essentially trying to create spaces for questioning and thinking and, if possible, opening up spaces for comparative views of educational models in Europe. As such, we are aware that we are creating visual materials about a reality, that is also the creation of a fiction.
