Symposium
Contribution
Teacher education needs to be transformative in order to produce quality teachers equipped with the values, knowledge and skills to raise a new generation of 21st century learners. The National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore has adopted a new model of Teacher Education for the 21st century (TE21) (National Institute of Education, 2009) which aims to prepare autonomous thinking teachers for the 21st century. One of the defining elements in the TE21 model is the use of e-Portfolio to help our student teachers build their conceptual map of learning and teaching. Studies have verified the value of e-portfolio in teacher education to promote teachers’ learning and development, to document their growth, to encourage self-assessment and reflection, and to provide evidence for assessment and accountability. Thus, this research seeks to examine student teachers’ perceptions and experiences of the e-Portfolio in facilitating their construction of learning in NIE. Self-reported questionnaires were administered to student teachers doing the e-Portfolio course from the Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) programme at the NIE, Singapore. Face to face interviews were also conducted to provide a more in-depth analysis of how the e-Portfolio facilitates their growth and development. Preliminary findings indicated that student teachers viewed the use of the e-Portfolio as a tool beyond mere storage and aggregation of artefacts, and that of the ability to solidify one’s personal instructional philosophy that will impact their classroom practices. They acknowledged the e-Portfolio as a tool to facilitate reflection on their teaching practices and gave them a better understanding of themselves as teachers. Results from this study will illuminate the applicability of e-Portfolio in teacher education specifically on how it fosters student teachers’ development into thinking teachers. In addition, implications of findings for practice and further studies will be discussed.
