Contribution

Creative School Partnerships with Visual Artists (CREARTE), is a project for experimenting pedagogies based on contemporary art practices in primary schools. The project has been co-funded with support from the European Commission (2015-1-PT01-KA201-012989 and took place in five European countries (Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom, Sweden, Cyprus). The presentation will briefly introduce the project and its goals within a contemporary thinking about arts education in primary schools. It will focus in more detail the Portuguese participation in the project. It presents how the arts are inscribed within the curriculum and the current situation in terms of teachers' preparation to teach the arts. The project aims to rethink the place of the arts in primary school education and suggests a collaborative work with local artists. This presentation will underline the place of the arts as a significant curriculum subject that corresponds to a particular knowledge and way of knowing, that is more than the current expressionist or 'to do' list approach. The presentation will outline the more interesting challenges that this projects represents for the portuguese arts education scenario.

Method

CREARTE consisted in the work of artists in primary schools, working in collaboration with teachers and students. The Portuguese projects will be briefly presented trying to stress their challenges and limits in terms of the actions taken. More papers, in the session, will give the participants a detailed overview of the principles and goals of its implementation.

Expected Outcomes

The presentation will outline: the difficulties in implementing the project (conceptual and pragmatic); the risks and the opportunities of developing these kind of projects in primary schools; the more interesting challenges that this projects represents for the portuguese arts education scenario.
