25 SES 14 B, Children's Rights in European Education. Dilemmas, Challenges and Implementation Regarding Roma Children
Symposium
Contribution
The contribution deals with the current situation of Roma community in the area of rights in education (in the Czech Republic). The aim of the paper is to present possibilities of Roma children in the system of education from the perspective of their parents. The paper focuses on how parents perceive, make decision, and act when they deal with their children education career which is ensured by the Ministry of Education legal framework. This paper is based on the longitudinal ethnographic research which was conducted by the team Levínská, Bittnerová, Doubek in 2005-2018. The research was focused on cultural models in education and in helping professions in social excluded localities. Findings from the participant observations and open interviews will be supplemented by semi-structured interviews with Roma parents or other people from Roma community who have experience in learning at various levels of education system and who live both inside and outside excluded locations. In order to maximize the holistic perspective, expertise of our colleagues working and publishing in this area will be included into the interpretation of the outcomes. In term the social structure of the Roma is heterogeneous, the negotiation of parents about the educational careers of children with representatives of state institutions depends on their social position. However, they all face stereotypes, which in turn are that complicates the implementation of human rights.
