Symposium
Contribution
The research project “Soutien au développement de démarches d'édition numérique jeunesse au Québec” (Lacelle, 2017-2021) identified points of rupture in the chain of production, dissemination and reception of digital contents for youth, accompanied the design and development of 14 original digital projects and analyzed these co-creation experiences in order to make recommendations to the editorial, cultural and educational communities to systematize processes favorable to the creation, dissemination and distribution of digital content for youth (Lacelle et al., 2021). One of the projects focused specifically on the digital potential of documentaries for youth, studying the case of the collection “Mémoire d'images”. Considering the very low production of youth documentary albums in Quebec in digital format other than .pdf (Martel, Boutin, McLaughlin and Lemieux, 2019) and assuming the interest of using them to learn about various themes (Martel, 2018; Vallière, Martel et al., forthcoming), this project analyzed the value of digital technology when one wishes to 1) enrich/increase/dynamize the informative contribution of a children's documentary work, but also 2) integrate within the medium an accompaniment to multimodal reading/reception (Lacelle, Boutin & Lebrun, 2017). This digital potential (enriched and interactive incursion into "documented" themes; design and integration of didactic tools supporting the appropriation of the proposed informative contents and the development of literacy skills) was also recommended to the main partner, the editor “Les 400 coups”. Since it was not financially possible, during this first stage, to concretely embody some of the analyzed potentialities in an enriched digital documentary work, we recently undertook this second stage of prototyped production, this time within the framework of a research project on the development of digital competence of Quebec students through digital pedagogical practices that rely on multimodal media literacy skills (Boutin et al., 2021). We are now pursuing the objective of evaluating the reception by students of such an enriched digital documentary (content and especially integrated reading/reception support). It is these two stages - Lacelle's (2017 - 2021) and Boutin's (2020-2023) studies - that will be discussed at the symposium, with particular emphasis on the tools/devices/tasks that seem most promising for accompanying the teaching of reception of digital youth documentaries.
