This contribution focuses on the opportunities for successful scholarly research through effective use of the Internet. A systematic approach necessary for the research of specialist scientific information is then demonstrated. In conclusion, a selection of useful information resources for the subject field are introduced. In this presentation we would like to compare a search query related to Vocational Education and Training (VET) in an Internet search engine with a query in special online portals, websites and databases. With the comparison of the query “Implementation of National Qualification Framework in Austria and in Germany in the course of the Implementation of the European Qualification Framework” we would like to point out the advantage of using subject-specific information resources. The subject-specific information resources we would like to present are the ReferNet-Portal, the Literature Database LDBB and VET-Bib. ReferNet is a structured and decentralized system for collecting data and information on VET and related issues. It makes it possible to compare trends, developments and policies in the EU Member States as well as Norway and Island. There are three main activity areas in the ReferNet work: 1. Analysis of reports on national VET systems. 2. Analysis of reports about the main research activities in VET. 3. Documentation and dissemination of information on VET in Europe. VET-Bib is the European Literature database of CEDEFOP and comprises about 72,000 bibliographic references. The collection contains research reports, EU policy and legislative documents etc. all over Europe. ReferNet indexes German publications and online media about VET into this database. ReferNet transfers international literature - mainly from Austria, Switzerland and literature published by CEDEFOP - about VET into the LDBB, the largest database on VET literature in Germany. The German Literature Database for VET (Literaturdatenbank Berufliche Bildung, LDBB) contains the scholarly references with the main focus on German high quality produced literature, such as journal articles, which are difficult it provides to research via library catalogues or the Internet. The LDBB currently comprises approximately 52,000 references from 1988 onwards, providing specialist material on all aspects of the thematic areas of VET and VET research. Content may be accessed via keywords, abstracts and via a subject-specific classification system. We would like to point out the connection between subject indexing and good research results. The indexing instruments described above enable a more precise description of documents, and thus enable them to be found more easily during the search process. The basic characteristics of a good search result are a high level of precision and completeness. When researching information on the Internet using search engines such as Google, Yahoo or Bing, a number of deficits become apparent, at least in comparison with classical database researches.
