Paper Session
Contribution
This paper draws on a two-year research project (MeiLe) funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the European Social Fund (ESF) of the European Commission.
Children and adolescents are growing up in different life contexts and environments which offer different learning opportunities. Educational contexts do not only include school as an institution but also other contexts such as family or peer group. Media play a special role in the formal and informal educational contexts of children and adolescents because they are an essential part of their media culture with their families, their friends and within their schools (e.g. Livingstone/ Bovill 2001). In many European countries there is a clear difference between high media access and frequent use at home and minor access and less frequent use in schools, in particularly in Germany (OECD 2006; Herzig/ Grafe 2007; EuroMeduc 2009). All in all, there seems to be a gap between the media use in different educational contexts of children and adolescents which is difficult to bridge.
Currently, there is a need for further research about the media cultures and practices (Krotz 2008) of German children and adolescents in formal and informal educational contexts and especially about how the gaps can be bridged and how the change in society´s media culture can be integrated into school (BMFSFJ 2005).
Against this background the main research question of the project is to ask if media – in particular digital media – can contribute to connect formal and informal educational contexts and to support a participatory culture (Jenkins 2006). The research draws attention to the potential of informal learning with media and is seeking to develop recommendations for connecting formal and informal educational contexts.
The conceptual framework refers to practice theories (e.g. Reckwitz 2002) and theories of media education (e.g. Buckingham 2003, Tulodziecki/ Herzig/ Grafe 2010, forthcoming).
The project is seeking to develop recommendations how the formal and informal educational contexts can be connected and to discuss the implications for media education in school.
The sample of this study contains 24 schools in Germany which took part in the project “open learning environments in schools” funded by the BMBF. These schools implemented ‘open learning environments’ which means that there is a space as a pedagogical environment and as a stimulus for learning processes, with free access, free choice for learning activities and methods and equipped with analog and digital media. The results presented in this paper focus on how these open learning environments are perceived and used by pupils and teachers and if they can be a means to connect formal and informal learning with media.
