Symposium
Contribution
The significance of space for the implementation and change of school-structural order hasn't been systematically explored in the field of educational science. We intend to close this gap by conducting a comparative study of different school architectures by which we hope to shed light on the influences of school-architecture on the communication and interaction within pedagogical and instructional processes in schools. In our study we are selecting schools which differ in what we call 'spatial openness and closeness'. Thereby it is taken into consideration that space concepts are based on different assumptions concerning the categories of dimension, action and structure. We are contrasting the investigated schools in view of their spatial concepts, their space practices and their material architecture. The final objective of the project consists in the elaboration of a theory of 'Bildung' considering questions of space and school-culture. This theory shall be grounded in an empiric investigation of the creation and avoidance of boundaries, a topic which is gaining increased relevance within the context of globalisation and medialisation. In our presentation we will introduce first results of our project.
