06 SES 10, At the Interface – Building New Relations Between Formal and Informal Learning (part 1)
Symposium, Continued in 06 SES 11
Contribution
In some countries, like the US, there is, both in policy, practice and research, a strong division between school learning and non-/in-formal ways of learning. Important US based after school programs, like ‘5th Dimension’ (Cole et al. 2006), ‘digital storytelling’ (Hull & Katz, 2006) and ‘La Clase Magica’ (Vasquez, 2003) have been set up as alternatives to school-based learning. In other countries, like Norway, informal ways of learning are more embedded as part of learning activities in schools. Technological and cultural developments have enhanced the need to question what we mean by formal or informal learning. This paper has two objectives. The first is to present the theoretical underpinnings of what I call a ‘learning lives’ approach, moving beyond the simplistic and polarised notions of formal versus informal learning. The second objective is to use data from two school based projects in Norway to rethink ‘teaching’ and ‘learning’; one is a collaboration between two schools, east and west in Oslo, about differences of growing up in the two communities, and one about ‘knowledge building’ (Scardamalia & Bereiter, 2006) in science education, both using video data and interviews.
