Symposium, Continued from 06 SES 10
Contribution
Constructionism has been a highly successful guiding pedagogy to engage diverse learners across formal and informal spaces (Papert, 1980, 1993; Kafai, 2006). This approach places learners in the role of designers and ties together the importance of designing artifacts that are both personally meaningful and of relevance to a larger community. In this context, the individual, the artifact, and collaborative input of the community shape learning, participation, and sharing. Sociocultural constructionists further contend that individuals and communities develop reciprocally through shared constructive activity (Peppler & Kafai, 2007; Pinkett, 2000). This study focuses on an informal technology center in Los Angeles, where underprivileged youth accessed programming environments emphasizing graphic, music and video (Peppler, 2007). A mixed-methods design was utilized that analyzed data from participant interviews, an archive of youths’ work, and videotaped observations. In this presentation, the ways in which youth leverage popular media to design artefacts that are both personally meaningful and of relevance to a larger community are explored, leading to important learning outcomes and sustained participation. Creative production can transform both the identity of an individual and that of the community. The implications of these findings are discussed, including the potential of such an approach in formal schooling.
