07 SES 10 B, Developing Equity in Schools: Exploring the Contributions of Students in Three European Countries
Symposium
Contribution
The research reported in this paper focuses on analyzing the capacity of schools to respond to diversity in ways that value everyone equally. It aims to identify patterns of inequity and to devise practices that respond to these issues, so that all students are included. The study was carried out in Gaudem School, which has recently been transformed into a comprehensive school, having previously been a special school for deaf students. This fact means that the school needs to move forward and explore more inclusive educational strategies in order to deal with the increased diversity of its student population. We basically wanted to explore ways in which students’ voices could be used as a ‘lever’ for school development. Within the project, students are supported to become researchers in their school through using a variety of different research techniques. In particular, data are gathered by student teams through focus groups, observations and interviews. These data are reported to school staff periodically in order that they can be used to inform decision making. We are analyzing the extent to which the perspectives of students are leading the school to identify potential areas of concern and to plan actions accordingly.
