Symposium, Continued in 07 SES 11 A
Contribution
Women’s and Gender studies has a long and recognized history in educational sciences in Finland. Still, the main educational ethos has stressed gender neutrality; gender and especially diverse sexualities are not part of the core curriculum of teacher education. During the last years gender equality has been raised up by the Ministry of Education. In 2008 the project Gender awareness in teacher education (TASUKO) was launched for mainstreaming gender equality and improving the understanding of gender in teacher training. At the University of Lapland we have, for years, offered a course called “Gendering practices of education” to school teacher students. In our TASUKO-subproject we will analyse first, how the teachers in the field value gender specific knowledge which they gained at the university, second, what kind of experiences the university teachers have got while lecturing gender issues to teacher students, and third, how do the present students comment the significance and meaning of knowledge concerning gender and sexualities. In this paper, I will discuss the third part of the project by analysing students’ feedback and comments (60 pieces) concerning the course lectured by myself in 2008.
