Symposium, Continued in 07 SES 11 A
Contribution
After Iceland´s participation in Nord-Lilia, the Nordic project sponsored by Nordisk Ministerråd from 1992-1994, there came a long pause in the discussion of gender in teacher education. The “boy turn“ gradually dominated the Icelandic education discourse, and a few conferences were held in Reykjavík between 1997 and 2007, sponsored by the ministry of education and some local authorities. After the Nordic conference in Reykjavik in September 2009 on the issue, where the importance of teacher training was emphasized, the dean of the School of Education asked the author for a memo on the situation in teacher training at the University of Iceland and for recommendations in view of the fact that teacher training is now being extended from 3 to 5 years. In this paper I ask the following questions: How is the situation on gender and education in teacher training in Iceland? What kind of improvements are being discussed or recommended in teacher training, in schools and in research?
