07 SES 10 A, Gender and Sexualities in Teacher Training and Higher Education (part 1)
Symposium, Continued in 07 SES 11 A
Contribution
In my presentation, teachers’ attitudes and experiences in relation to sexual diversity are analysed. The magazine Opettaja (“Teacher”), funded by the National Trade Union for Teachers, published an article on teachers’ views of sexual minorities based on a survey of over a thousand teachers. I had the opportunity to use this data in my analysis. Of the teacher respondents, 13 percent were lesbian, gay or bisexual. One of my aims is to analyse the differences and similarities of the respondents based on their sexual orientation. Another aim is to interpret two tensions found in the data: firstly, the teacher respondents primarily had very positive attitudes towards the equality of non-heterosexual people in society in general, but most of them were not interested in changing their practices within the school context. In addition, the majority of them thought that school is not a safe place for non-heterosexual students to express their sexual orientation, yet they were not interested in getting more ideas and tools for changing the culture of their school.
