09 SES 06 A, Towards Explaining Achievement - Findings from International Comparative Achievement Studies 5: Performance Issues in Different Subject Domains (part 2)
Symposium, Continued from 09 SES 05 A
Contribution
Our research question is: Do the students in Serbia with similar performance but with different SES have the same probability to be enrolled in the grammar schools that usually leads to continuance of education and provides a higher quality education? We carried out comparative analyses on the basis of the PISA 2006 data. Results tell us that in Serbia, the share of the most successful students with the lowest SES, enrolled in grammar schools in 2006 is 29 percentage points lower than the average for the group, while the share of the highest SES students enrolled in grammar schools is 16 percentage points higher than the average. In other words, the lowest SES children had 3.4 times lower opportunity to enroll in grammar schools in 2006 relative to the average. The opportunity for the highest SES children was two times higher than for the average. When we compare the opportunities of the students in some other countries, the situation in Serbia is more favorable than in Bulgaria and in Croatia. However, the situation in Slovakia is slightly better than in Serbia.
