02 SES 08 C, Supporting Young People in Choosing their Vocational or Academic Pathways: Potential of Digital Tools in Career Guidance
Symposium
Contribution
Context: One of the main focus areas of European educational policies is early school leaving, trying to understand how it occurs, reduce it as much as possible, and propose actions to promote second-chance education and school reincorporation programs. At the same time, the relevance of an adequate vocational guidance has been growing both to prevent the dropout and to tackle the challenge of enabling those who previously left their studies to return to the education system and training for employment. In this process, digital tools are an undeniable support resource for providing and disseminating information across all groups and contexts. Based on these premises, we aim to improve career guidance focusing on identifying the main difficulties they find in returning to formal education and creating their professional and academic pathways. Then, we identify relevant guidance content and try to provide different resources that facilitates the vocational process. Approach: Information has been collected through collective interviews with university students and with people who have left their studies. Findings: They allow us to understand the obstacles they encounter in this process, and the information and advice they need to succeed. Additionally, a survey is being conducted with counsellors to outline the more effective strategies and future needs. The study serves as a foundation for improving academic and career guidance in two ways: first, by enhancing the information provided, which is useful for understanding the wide range of options offered by the education system, and thus helping to reduce the early school leaving. Second, this knowledge is reflected in different measures and resources. Conclusions: Guidance improves mainly through digital useful resources, collaborators training, individual counselling and large scope actions. Furthermore, efforts will be made to establish collaboration networks among different organizations and institutions. Finally, specific training activities will be designed for counsellors and mentors who assist individuals in their vocational decisions.
