12 SES 15 A, Educating Educational Researchers by Open Educational Research Infrastructure Design
Symposium
Contribution
In a world fractured by conflict, inequality, and displacement, education translates into hope. Yet for millions, access to education is a distant dream, obstructed by economic barriers, systemic injustice, and war. Open Education offers an alternative, breaking down these barriers and delivering the tools of empowerment to even the most vulnerable communities. It is not just a framework for learning; it is a lifeline, a bridge to better futures This contribution explores how Open Education can serve as a tool for survival and long-term prosperity in vulnerable communities, emphasizing its capacity to foster resilience, promote inclusion, and empower individuals through accessible knowledge and skills. The talk examines real-world examples where Open Educational Resources and Open Science practices have enabled marginalized groups—refugees, individuals in low-income regions, and people in conflict zones—to access education. The discussion also highlights the dual role of OE: as an immediate response to crises and as a long-term strategy for sustainable educational growth. Ultimately, this contribution calls for reimagining education through openness, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of a better world.
