Paper Session
Contribution
The presentation focuses on a drawing school of 19th century origin and the museum-quality art collection preserved in the school's surroundings, which is still used in education today. The school is the nearly 250-year-old Kisképző (Secondary School of Fine Arts) in Budapest, and its art collection is the Schola Graphidis Art Collection, founded in 2014. The history of the school dates back to the Ratio Educationis, when art schools were established in the major cities of Austria-Hungary. The Industrial Drawing School of Budapest, the predecessor of the Art School, was founded in 1886 by reorganising the drawing schools of Budapest, which had previously been mainly concerned with the training of craftsmen. In the late 19th century, the school had its own building. In addition to the drawing school function, representative spaces were created for the school's collection. The school thus acquired a strong quasi-museum function. By this time the school had a substantial collection of specimen bases, plaster casts, art and teaching materials used and made for teaching purposes. The school currently has 10 secondary-level arts and crafts courses. The collection and 21st century art education are directly linked: teachers and students use the collection on an ongoing basis and the best student work is archived for the collection.
Method
The research follows an idiographic, deductive, qualitative paradigm, and draws on primary sources. The primary sources are the works collected and produced during industrial drawing education, drawing education, and later during the transforming art education, now preserved in the Schola Graphidis Art Collection, school records and yearbooks, as well as documents and original architectural plans in the Budapest City Archives. The presentation will explore the specific nature of the institution and the role of the art collection in education by processing primary sources. The continuous archiving of works allows comparative historical (diachronic and synchronous analyses). The relevant literature and primary sources will be processed through comparative content analysis. The presentation will examine the role of the school's own collection in the pedagogical practice of the art school. How is the collection used in the current teaching practice of the institution? In examining these issues, our main analytical concerns are: the examination of reception effects, the analysis of the survival of the tradition of guild drawing education, and the relationship between contemporary art education and the collection.
Expected Outcomes
The expected outcome and utility of the analysis, beyond the historical background, is to provide a more accurate picture of the traditions and pedagogical practices of art education in Hungary, as well as its international links and impact on contemporary art education. The lecture will describe the presence of German-Austrian reception influences and the professional path of the drawing teacher and the art teacher (artist). The pedagogical and professionalisation role of regular exhibitions in and out of school, which can be traced back to the guild tradition, in contemporary art and professional education will be presented. Through the exhibited student works, art teachers and students update their methodological kit, learn from each other, strengthen their professional identity and at the same time continuously enrich and recreate the institution's art collection.
