The Action Research Project 'Development of Regional Psychiatric Institutions as Learning Environments' address staffing problems in the field of psychiatry. It is run with the National Centre of Competence Development and regional psychiatric institutions around Denmark. It involves 100 nurses who are mentors for student nurses, 13 education coordinators and a researcher, who is me. It is a three year project which will be finished in September 2011. The purpose of the study is to discover and describe missed learning opportunities at the participating psychiatric institutions, thereby developing the institutions' roles as clinical learning environments. This will be achieved firstly by mentors using the 'Windmill model' as a pedagogical tool in the student nurses' clinical learning. Secondly, by developing nurses' competences as mentors, e.g. by getting better to identify and use learning opportunities at their workplaces in relation to counselling students. Additionally, the purpose is to develop new concepts about workplace learning (learning in practice).
