Contribution

The transformation or adaptation of a traditional distance learning system to a system that recurs to information and communication technology has implications in different levels.  Changes in the methodology occur at the same time as changes in mentality and in the roles of the participants in the process. Among them we highlight the teacher’s practices in which he/she is assigned new roles and responsibilities.

The virtualization of the learning system presumes the alteration of a model centered in the teacher to a model centered in the student. This change implies that the teacher is seen more like a facilitator that helps students in the process of constructing knowledge, through feedback and reports made during their training. According to Mason & Rennie (2008) the role of the teacher or tutor is to design the courses so that they promote constructive interactions among participants and help students individually or collectively, to achieve true meaningful learning.

Our proposal aims to present the strategy adopted by us to manage and monitor the work developed by a team of e-tutors that follow the students’ learning process in a specific course unit.

First we fit in the light of Virtual Pedagogical Model of the Universidade Aberta, the existence of e-tutors, their role, their training and their relationship with the teacher responsible for each course unit. Secondly, we will expose the reason to our choice of methodology of work, its organization and development. Lastly, we will introduce a reflection based in our experience, as well as the e-tutors comments.

Method

Our sample comprises two groups of e-tutors that followed in two different editions of the same course. For each edition, a space was created in the Moodle platform for the management of different groups of e-tutors. The e-tutors, have never met personally. Their interaction is made only in the virtual environment. This space was aimed at sharing experiences and information among tutors and professor in charge, and between them, in order to create a real collaborative work. We analyzed the existing forums in each of these spaces - Meeting Point. The first forum - Forum News - was mainly used to provide information and warnings on some points and important dates for the development the course unit. The second Forum - Forum Team Teaching - is aimed at sharing information, answering questions and supporting the development of the task. In addition to forums we still had a space to share important documents such as proposals for evaluation, correction grids, among others. For the 1st year, the analysis revealed that the forums throughout the semester were placed 325 posts. Regarding the second group of e-tutors, were placed a total of 421 posts.

Expected Outcomes

Analysis of the various posts allowed us to verify the relevance of such spaces for the management of different classes of the same course unit and followed by different e-tutors. All this to ensure a dissemination close to the content and also a equitable treatment in terms of procedures. There was a great collaboration between members in both groups. The monitoring and strengthening of the posts in some critical situations are such examples. In the end, the team was reinforced and when it asked questions also appeared motions for resolution that were shared and discussed by all to achieve a consensus. In conclusion, "I would also leave my opinion here, the good that was / has been this space to exchange opinions, ask questions, leave confidences and especially check procedures among other things."
