Contribution

History and structure of italian educational science are barely present in the european discourse. The topics and problems the italian researchers deal with are widely unknown. But – in times of globalization – insight in and understanding of different disciplinary cultures are crucial for academic communication on an international level.

Therefore, the aim of this contribution is to bring an essential part of italian educational science to an international audience. As scientific journals constitute the discourse of an academic discipline (cfr. Keiner 1999) they significantly reflect the state of a discipline in a given period. Thus journals of educational science are an interesting and important source for educational research on educational research.

Until now there is no analysis of such journals in Italy. During the 1990ies some efforts were made by italian scholars to establish bibliografies of educational journals of the late 19th century and of the first decades of the 20th century (e.g. Chiosso 1997). Also studies have been published which analyse the content of this period‘s journals (cfr. Gramigna 1994; Catarsi 1995). Regarding the journals founded after World War II there is barely no research done yet – in spite of some small articles (e.g. Cardamone 1992; Genovesi 1995), also written during the 1990ies. Therefore this contribution wants to do a first step to close this breach in research and to introduce Italian educational science into a more international discourse by referring to a sociology of knowledge and using content analysis and social science research methods.

Method

The methods used are not taken from social-history, but from empirical social science research, including content analyses. This means that the paper wants to outline the mainly discussed topics in Italian educational research by analysing the content and title of the articles from a non-native speaker’s perspective. It also will examine which methods the articles use, whether they are based on empirical data or not. Subject of the analysis are important italian educational journals such as Ricerche Pedagogiche, Scuola e Città or Orientamenti pedagogici. The analysed period will be the past decade (2000-2010).

Expected Outcomes

This contribution wants to show which topics and problems are dealt by the authors of educational journals. Are there similarities or differences compared to other european countries? This paper also wants to answer the question if and to what extent italian educational research is part of a European discourse in educational science. And finally it should give us an idea to what extent educational research in Italy is of importance and influential for educational research in other european countries.
