01 SES 06 A, Practices as Living Entities: Leading and Learning in Ecologies of Practices
Symposium
Contribution
In education, leading practices are those which create and sustain conditions in which learning and teaching may flourish. This paper draws on case studies from Australia, Norway and Sweden to examine how leading practices are enacted at multiple levels in diverse settings by teachers, administrators, officials and students. Inspired by Czarniawska’s (2005) notion of ‘travelling practices, w e describe how particular practices of leading move between sites, transforming and evolving as they do so. The notion captures the primary purpose of leading, namely, fostering the movement of specific practices which enhance professional learning and students’ academic and social learning. We also draw on the notion of ‘ecologies of practices’ (Kemmis et al, 2009) to view practices of leading as lived and interconnected with other practices within and across sites.
