03 SES 09, Inside a Core Curriculum - Redefining its Basic Educational Purposes

This presentation is based on study of innovative schools conducted in 2010-2011. Sample of schools observed, have used innovative approaches in applying national core curriculum as follows: Integrating local cultural tradition and entrepreneurship; Preparing subjects and implementing teaching in cooperation with local schools; Putting special focus on one theme in each year, following cross-curricular themes approach; Using combination of subjects to develop special electives for their students; Pupils’ involvement in decision making and participation in development of learning environment, initiated by school leaders; Purposeful use of teamwork; Shared values of teachers and students Development of school curriculum can be characterised as meaningful approach to national curriculum and creative use of choices provided in observed schools. These schools implement additional activities in order to support teaching process and make school more attractive. Project-based activities help implement innovations, diversify teaching process and keep up-to-date learning environment. Innovations in school management support curriculum development and implementation. Design school development plan, proceeding self-evaluation, promote professional development, are activities initiated by the Act of basic school and upper secondary school.
