As director of Kilkenny Education Centre I work with others to create opportunities for teachers to engage in continuing professional education (CPD). CPD is not compulsory in Ireland, so my work involves developing courses, programmes and projects that encourage schools and individuals to participate in CPD processes. Thus I aim to contribute to a new national culture of teaching practices for a knowledge economy for cultural regeneration, through new forms of teacher education that focus on exploring the knowledge teachers can offer to and for one another. My research focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of our provision of whole-school projects, involving several schools as communities of practice, sharing how they engage students and teachers to find ways of improving the quality of learning for all. A key significance of this work is a necessary shift from an in-service culture that positions teachers as consumers and implementers of abstract knowledge to one in which they become knowledge-creators. This also involves a shift from cultures of practice to cultures of enquiry, and the transformation of teachers into educational researchers and theorists of their individual and collective practices.
