16 SES 06 A, The Use of ICT to Promote the Professional Development of Teachers: Themes and Issues (Part 1)
Symposium, continues in 16 Ses 07 A
Contribution
In training teachers through the UK secondary Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), it is expected that subject knowledge in main subjects will be enhanced as an element of professional development en route to qualified teacher status. This project focused on developing both subject knowledge and the embedding of technology within pedagogical approaches for student teachers undertaking secondary PGCEs in geography, history and citizenship at the University of Leicester, UK. Students were introduced to the work of a non-governmental organisation called Afghan Action, and supported by the charity, were asked to work in small groups to create lesson sequences which led to the production of both paper based resources and micro-websites. This activity required the student teachers to search curriculum documents to link national curriculum requirements with the focus of Afghan Action, before considering the resources they would develop leading to online open-source resources. As such, thought needed to be given to both the subject knowledge to be developed and included in open-source materials as well as the nature and presentation of material through online media, in this case a website. Perceptions of student teachers regarding the activities, and an analysis of the materials developed and presented are discussed.
