16 SES 06 A, The Use of ICT to Promote the Professional Development of Teachers: Themes and Issues (Part 1)
Symposium, continues in 16 Ses 07 A
Contribution
In an increasingly global society, the value of acquiring a second language and understanding the culture of the country speaking that language is indisputable. Every language is unique in the way it reflects national social, cultural and historical structures. Thus, through learning a language, we also learn something of the culture of that country, a process which is enhanced when language learning involves cross-cultural communication. ICT has a key role to play here, not only as a means of communication, but as many ICT concepts are developed in and through the English language, pupils’ communicative competence improves alongside their digital competence. Acquisition of both expands pupils’ personal and professional opportunities, especially where this involves the medium of English. As part of the IntTT project we constructed digitally-based didactic activities for developing digital and communicative competences and subject content learning in schools. developed around the novel The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (Muriel Spark,1961) to explore aspects of cultural identity in Spain and Scotland. The activities integrate English, Literature, Culture, History, Art, Music, Geography, Political and Social aspects. We discuss how these activities actively contribute to the development of both digital and communicative competence as well as increased cultural understanding.
