This two-part symposium considers the ways in which ICT - in its many guises - has the potential to facilitate and enhance the proessional deveopment of teachers, both pre-service and in-service. This opening paper sets the scene for the symposium by considering 4 main issues 1. The relative lack of research in this area when compared to the abundant body of knowledge about the uses of ICT in classroom-learning contexts 2. Drawing on a recently-completed literature review, the key themes and issues which emerge from such research that does exist in this area 3. The potential of new and emerging technologies, such as those which come under the umbrella of 'Web. 2.0' for innovative professional development practices 4. The implications of points 1-3 (above) for future research agendas. The paper will be contextualised with reference to an ongoing Comenius-funded project - Integral Teacher Training (IntTT) - of which the author is a member. The project involves teacher educators in 6 EU partner nations who are exploring the potential of ICT to develop the digital and communicative competencies of beginning teachers as well as, through engaging in this process, of those that educate them.
