16 SES 07 A, The Use of ICT to Promote the Professional Development of Teachers: Themes and Issues (Part 2)
Symposium, continues from 16 Ses 06 A
Contribution
The use of ICT in Science is still rather limited in Portugal. In order to promote its use and the development of scientific and communicative competences in the classroom, a professional development programme (PDP) was developed, as part of the Comenius funded Integral Teacher Training (IntTT) project, with twenty physics and chemistry schoolteachers in different schools. Teachers constructed a wiki (using online editable websites) and used it with pupils who were asked to learn through inquiry activities with the wiki. The present paper reports on a qualitative evaluation of the project and describes teachers’ pedagogical development during the design and implementation of wikis in the classroom. Teachers were asked to reflect on their use of wikis and what they learned during the process. The analysis shows that teachers developed new teaching strategies through designing and using wikis in their classroom. Through reflecting on their own, and others’ practices, they had opportunities to learn new ways of making instructional decisions. They were enthusiastic about the process, grew in their own knowledge about teaching and learning science using ICT and valued the opportunities for reflection. The paper concludes with a consideration of the implications of the project findings for policy and practice.
