Contribution
We aim to present the first results of the FIRB / VISEL project in the development of a Deaf-centered E-Learning Environment (DELE) for promoting literacy and SRL skills in young and adult prelinguistic deaf learners. The project chooses an educational method related to the facilities of any e-learning environment, focusing in promoting self-regulated learning in a multilingual domain. The aim is to lead learners to be aware of their linguistic knowledge, and to activate the necessary strategies to improve them. Considering the visual skills of our learners, a strong investment has been done on the metaphoric dimension of the e-learning environment which will be offered as an immersive virtual space recalling the organization and structure of a University Campus: virtual locations and social opportunities will be developed, such as a Museum of the Written Language, in which cooperative activities on texts will be suggested. The goal of the VISEL project is to meet the educational needs of the deaf through a strong investment in their skills and the use of different linguistic codes to meet the needs of both deaf learners who prefer to communicate in Italian Sign Language (LIS-L1) and deaf learners who prefer to communicate in Italian (Italian-L1).
