Session Information
16 SES 09 A, Computer and Information Literacy Across Europe (Part 2)
Symposium, continues from 16 Ses 08
Contribution
Information literacy in Finnish schools is a wide concept referring media literacy components: 1) acquiring and creation of knowledge with skills to use different forms of ICT 2) critical media competence with skills to evaluate quality of information and knowledge, 3) social media competence with skills to use of ICT for collaborative learning and communication and 4) technical skills in ICT. This presentation is an evidence-based analysis how different information literacy components have been achieved in Finnish schools in light of different empirical data sources: OECD PISA results of reading performances; SITES 2006 on ICT use in schools; studies how teacher education provides ICT competences; results of the data gathered in 20 schools for a new national educational technology plan (2010) and tentative findings of the national research project Educational Technology in School’s Everyday Life Project having results of 13 research groups (2010). The national educational technology plan was published in December 2010 to give guidelines how to ensure high skills in information literacy to all students. It contains 29 recommendations how to face recent and future challenges in applying ICT in schools as well as in teacher education. The presentation will give an introduction on these recommendations.
