Sport pedagogy researchers are interested in the broad academic territory between education and sport. Therefore, Sport Pedagogy underpins physical education, coaching science/studies and fields such as kinesiology (USA), education physique et sportive (France) and human movement studies (Australia). Sport Pedagogy goes beyond ‘physical education’, it focuses on learning in, about and through sport/physical activity in all contexts including the school, community and family. Sport Pedagogy is also about understanding and improving learning in physical activity and sport at all stages in life, with a focus on physical activity for health and well-being through the life-course. In other words, Sport Pedagogy researchers focus on the needs of diverse learners of all ages in physical activity and sport - wherever they are found, on the abilities of professional teachers and coaches to meet those needs, and on the historical, social, political and economic contexts in which sport-related policy and knowledge are developed and delivered. Sport pedagogy, therefore, crosses the traditional and sometimes rigid borders between physical education and sport; coaching and teaching; sport, health and education policy; and sport sciences and education. The papers in this symposium will map out some of the key academic territory of Sport Pedagogy, leading to further discussion on future collaborative research.
