MC SES 05, Advanced Sport Pedagogy: Crossing Borders to Develop a New Research Agenda
Symposium - Launch of a new EERA network
Contribution
There are increasing numbers of reviews of pedagogy research in recent years, especially relating to children. These range from overviews of the complete field, to reviews of specific topics. This suggests that at least in the case of children and young people, the field of sport pedagogy is reaching a level of maturity and critical mass. Building on lessons learned from these reviews, we propose a future agenda for sport pedagogy research that seeks to cross at least three boundaries in order to move existing research programmes forward. The first boundary to be crossed lies between research and practice (including policy). We propose the development of practice-referenced research that informs and supports sustainable renewal of practice. The second boundary lies between the key dimensions of pedagogy, which are knowledge, learning and teaching/coaching enacted in specific contexts. We propose the development of programmes of relational research that explore the interdependency of these dimensions of pedagogy. The third boundary lies between pedagogy and other fields or disciplines. We propose the development of interdisciplinary research that enables sport pedagogy research to broaden its range of influence and to make contributions to research on topics that cannot be achieved by single disciplines alone.
